A note from the artist:
"This body of work is especially important to me as the details, craft and imagery represent the best work I have done to date. The more intimate scale of this body of work takes more time to paint and carve because it requires more precision in my brushwork and use of the wet sgraffito technique. I have to admit that I’m a little in love with the entire body of work."

"This dragon piece is hand painted with underglaze which is a liquid clay that is available in a multitude of colors. I always compare underglaze to watercolor. They are both translucent when painted on the surface of a vessel or a piece of paper. To build up the rich quality of the color, I paint multiple layers of the translucent underglaze on the surfaces of my pieces. Once the colorful painting is completed, I outline all the images with black underglaze and paint thousands of tiny lines to give additional depth to the painting. The background behind the dragon is alive with tiny carved lines that bring additional movement to the narrative story on the surface. As you can see, I also paint the bottoms of my pieces. I look at every surface as an opportunity to communicate with narrative and design, even if it’s not immediately seen."

"All the narrative imagery has symbolic meaning for me. The leaves represent change. The trees stand for strength and compromise, the dragon is a reminder to be fierce and have courage and the bird represents myself and the other important women in my life…mother, sisters, friends and our ability to adapt and survive. I think of each piece from this body of work as a treasure that will reveal itself to the viewer slowly over time."
