I want my pots to be a quiet record of this time and place. Unpretentious design and the sturdy build of functional pots encourage use. As they have held up over time, after being passed around the dinner table and stacked in the kitchen sink, they have served their function.

My immediate surroundings inspire me. The sweeping patterns of cornfields and the enduring patience of the nineteenth century barns show up in my work. The negative space in a handle, to my surprise, mimics the window openings of a four-story barn across the road. I find many aesthetic elements from the landscape around me subtly filtering into my pots.

I am drawn to pots in history that tare simple in form with direct surface treatments. Post made in China throughout the Han Dynasty and Korean pots from the Choson period are anonymous pots that come from a culture of functional potters. In their craft they expressed, through raised or incised line decoration and sturdy form, enduring work.

It is my hope that the pots I make will be used everyday. The owners of my pots will enjoy them in quiet repose or as a part of a lively gathering with family and friends. These pots will become the essence of the elements that create a home.
